2015 marks the 100th anniversary of The Print Center, and organizations citywide, including the Free Library of Philadelphia Print and Picture Collection, are joining in the celebration. The Print Center was founded by a group of Philadelphia collectors in 1915 as The Print Club, one of the first venues in the country dedicated to the appreciation of prints. Now a non-profit gallery located in Philadelphia's historic Rittenhouse Square neighborhood, The Print Center encourages the growth and understanding of photography and printmaking as vital contemporary arts through exhibitions, publications, and educational programs.
The Artists of The Print Center is an exhibition of works from the Print and Picture Collection highlighting our long association with The Print Center. Our files on The Print Center include documents from the 1910s and exhibition programs from the 1920s. Robert F. Looney, curator of the Library's Print and Picture Collection from 1963 to 1986, was a member of The Print Center's Board of Governors for many years. When budgets allow, the Print and Picture Collection acquires new works from The Print Center Gallery Store. This spring, staff and friends of The Print Center visited the Print and Picture Collection for a tour of the collection, and staff of the Free Library toured The Print Center a few weeks later. When The Print Center asked us to take part in The Print Center 100, its citywide celebration of its centennial, we were honored to be included. From etchings and lithographs to photographs and artists' books, this exhibition features the work of artists associated with The Print Center.
Artists in the exhibition include: Edna Andrade, Garo Antreasian, John Taylor Arms, Victoria Burge, Nancy Citrino, Kevin Cummins, Sandra C. Davis, Kip Deeds, Mildred Dillon, John Dowell, Linn Edwards, Amze Emmons, Wanda Gág, Rebecca Gilbert, David Graham Ann Hamilton, Stanley William Hayter, Earl Horter, Rockwell Kent, Mauricio Lasansky, Frances Lichten, Sam Maitin, Peter Paone, Stephen Perloff, Tony Rosati, Benton Spruance, James Syme, Ansei Uchima, Sarah Van Keuren, and Claire Van Vliet.
