Throughout March and including International Women’s Day on March 8, the Free Library will join in the nationwide celebration of the vital role of women throughout American History during Women’s History Month.

From special events at various neighborhood libraries (including screenings of and conversations about Sisters in Freedom, a new documentary that tells the story of the brave black and white women who banded together to fight slavery before abolition) to forthcoming blog posts highlighting strong Philadelphia women and must-reads about some of our favorite badass ladies, we can’t wait to celebrate and we hope you’ll join us!

On social media, we’ll also be participating in the National Museum of Women in the Arts’ (NMWA) #5WomenArtists campaign, joining over 200 organizations from 20 countries to mark Women’s History Month by sharing the important contributions of women in our collections and exhibitions, aiming to help the public answer – without hesitation – "Can you name five women artists?"

And here at the Free Library, we always use this opportunity to reflect on some of the amazing women who came before us at the library, paving the way for today’s leaders and leaving a lasting impact on our system.
