How Close Is Too Close? The Ethical Challenges of Making Documentaries About Living People
Virtual
This is the Golden Age of personal documentaries. Forced out of Hollywood by the high cost of fictional studio films, a record number of women are devoting their lives to producing films about the challenges confronting real people in a variety of different nations and cultures. This, in turn has produced a host of complex ethical questions. When the focus of a documentary lives in a poor Third World nation, should he or she be paid? If so, what factors should determine the compensation offered? If the focus of this film lives in a part of the world that is dangerous, should the filmmaker do something to make the protagonist safer? How much of a say should the “star” have in determining what appears on the screen?
Our guest expert for this program is the award-winning documentary maker and Professor, Dr. Lisa Leeman, who has confronted all of these questions in producing her own films. We think that you’ll find her answers fascinating.
