The Art Department of the Free Library of Philadelphia is looking for artists to teach book art workshops at the Parkway Central Library during winter and spring of 2025. These classes are supported in part by the Philadelphia Center for the Book.

What are book arts? 

Book arts relates to any aspect of the creation of the book, both structural and conceptual, exploring books and their components as forms of art. Need ideas for different book structures or books as art? For examples of past workshops, check out past events on PCB’s website. 

Workshop Information: 

• 6 workshops will be held on Saturday mornings from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. between January and June 2025, at the Parkway Central Library, located at 1901 Vine Street. Instructor hours are 9:30 am - 12:30 pm. 
• Instructors are compensated $200 for 3 hours of work (30 minutes set up, 2 hours teaching class, 30 minutes clean up). 
• These workshops are free and open to the public, but require registration. Due to the high volume of responses to attend a workshop, participants are selected at random. 
• The workshops must be beginner level and be completed in 2 hours. No previous book making experience should be necessary. If your workshop does assume bookbinding or sewing experience, please mention that in your proposal. 
• We provide 15 sets of basic supplies: rulers, bone folders, brushes, scissors, xacto knives, awls, needles, linen thread, cutting mats, glue. Additional supplies include copy paper, cardstock, and book cloth. We can not reimburse you for additional materials.
