R Is for Rockefeller: How Philadelphia Lost the Campaign to Host the United Nations
Virtual
A virtual program available on Zoom on Friday, September 6th at 11:00 A.M. Our speaker will be the Emerita Professor of History at Rutgers University/Camden, Dr. Charlene Mires.
At the end of World War II, Philadelphia was the third largest city in the U.S. It was also a major media and transportation hub. These facts, coupled with Philly’s unique role in shaping the nation, strongly suggested that “The City of Brotherly Love,” would be the perfect home for the U.N. However, while the local establishment included many sophisticated and wealthy people, they now had to compete with the immense political clout and seemingly infinite financial resources of the Rockefeller Family.
