Photo club: Featuring Jano Cohen
Art Department at Parkway Central Library
All photographers and photography fans are invited to drop in in on Photo Club meetings that typically take place every other month in the Art Department.
Our featured local photographer this month will be Jano Cohen who will present her work, particularly her recent book, Grace & Grit: Boxing at Shuler's Gym.
About Jano Cohen: I am a fine art and documentary photographer in the Philadelphia area, and I self published my book Grace & Grit: Boxing at Shuler's Gym with my co-author boxing historian John DiSanto in July of 2024. American Book Fest selected it as the 2024 Best Book Award in Photography. I presented a talk about the book at 20/20 Photo Festival in Philadelphia 2024, Unique Photo in Philadelphia 2024, and would like other opportunities to share this work.
In 2017 I was awarded a solo show of photographs about that gym at Open Lens Gallery in Philadelphia.
My other awards/exhibits include: Photo Review Web Exhibits 2024 and 2023. “RAW” exhibit at Noyes Museum, “Women at Work” at PhotoPlace Gallery, “Humans” at NY4PA, Online Exhibit on Red Filter Gallery, Moscow Foto Awards Editorial Silver Prize, Photo Review 13th prize, honorable mention Monochrome Awards, finalist 7th Pollux Awards, 20th Biennial of Fine Art and Documentary Photography, “Open Lens” at DaVinci Art Alliance, and Fotofoto Gallery.
My previous documentary work includes dance in an Alzheimer’s residential unit, the community of Philadelphia’s Chinatown shown at Asian Arts Initiative, and dance for street children in Rwanda.
My fine art work includes graphic and abstract interpretations of landscapes as well as strange and beautiful finds in urban decay.
