The John Sartain Collection

John Sartain was a well-known early 19th-century engraver who lived and worked in Philadelphia for much of his life. The Free Library's collection of John Sartain portrait prints is part of the John Frederick Lewis Portrait Collection, which is located in the Print and Picture Department on the second floor of Central Library. In addition to the numerous Sartain portrait prints owned by the Free Library, there are several other interesting Sartain engravings. Common Deer, the first line engraving by Sartain in America, was commissioned by noted Philadelphia printer Thomas Doughty.
