This 1953 aerial view shows the Schuylkill River, winding through East and West Fairmount Park, and the Belmont Pumping Station on the riverbank (lower left). In the middle of the river is Peters Island, an undeveloped islet, located between the Columbia Railroad Bridge below, and the Strawberry Mansion Bridge above. The Schuylkill Expressway, at various stages of construction, is seen skirting the Schuylkill River. The expressway was constructed over 10 years, from 1949 to 1959.
