Image taken by Philadelphia Evening Bulletin photographer Charles T. Higgins. Notes on the negative's envelope read: "N.D. [no date], dedication of John B. Kelly Olympic rowing statue"
This 1967 image shows the bronze statue of Philadelphia native John B. Kelly, Sr. (1889-1960), 3-time champion Olympic rower in the 1920s, on the occasion of its dedication on East River Drive (today, Kelly Drive, renamed in 1985 for Kelly's son, John B. Kelly, Jr.). The statue was a private gift of the Friends of Jack Kelly, and created by sculptor Harry Rosin (1897 - 1973).
Kelly, Sr., was father to actress Princess Grace Kelly, and John B. Kelly, Jr., also an Olympic oarsman. The Kellys were a prominent family in Philadelphia’s political and civic areas. Unfortunately, there is no information about the people pictured with the statue.
