This printed fragment a large initial ‘D’, colored by hand, showing a monk or friar – perhaps the 13th century Christian theologian Bonaventure – reading at a window. This image gives insight into the culture of the book: the book depicted has a clasp and five small metal bosses, which helped protect books from the normal wear-and-tear of use in medieval Europe.
