John Henley (1692-1756), commonly referred to as “Orator Henley,” was an English clergyman who became known for his theatrical style of oratory. In spite of being ridiculed by Alexander Pope in the Dunciad and caricatured by William Hogarth, Henley was highly popular among the people of London. He began a series of lectures, or “orations” upon giving up his benefice after a quarrel with the Bishop of London.
