Notes: "In this section of Southwark the streets were virtually unpaved in 1870. Police patrol outside the building, whose newness contrasts markedly with the wooden residences on either side. The clothing of the group posing for the camera is of simple cut. All this is in sharp contrast to the exactly contemporary view of 3rd and Gaskill Streets (No. 49), just a few blocks to the north, where the atmosphere was decidedly more prosperous."--OPEP, p. 14.
Notes: View of new four-story brick building, on corner of unpaved street. Men in suits and hats stand on the sidewalk around the building, among them two police officers. Wooden houses on either side of the building.
