"A nineteenth-century wooden Indian guards a tobacco shop and a confectionery housed in buildings of Colonial vintage. This scene is in the section of Philadelphia often referred to as the 'Old City,' which is roughly the area north from Society Hill to Vine
Street, and west from Front to about 7th."--OPEP, p. 101.
Two stores between row-houses. Store on left: "Fruit & confectionary." In front of store on right is a cigar store Indian on a pedestal: "Imported segars." Sign on wall next to statue: "...Irish American ... the priest hunter ..." Streetcar tracks on 5th. Handwritten on photograph: "August 1860."
