Friday Morning
My Dear Blanchard.
I inclose to Mrs. Blanchard an Invitation from my worser half to a gentle "flare" with which we are going to celebrate that stirring event,--a christening. We are very homely and unceremonious people, and Mrs. Dickens labours under some apprehension that there should have been previous callings and interchanges of formality. I have undertaken, however, to dispense with any such preliminaries, trusting that as we (i.e you and I) understand each other moderately well, Mrs. B and Mrs. D may arrive at a similar interchange of friendliness without first playing at company.
I went to see poor Chatfield, and am going again to-day. Forster is going with me. He seemed better; was in good spirits, and talked like a man who meant to come back to the World again. I told him he looked much better that I had expected, but I looked at him a long time and narrowly too, before I could detect the faintest trace of his former self.
Believe me always
Faithfully Yours
Charles Dickens
