Thursday Second June 1842.
My Dear Granville.
I have taken a State room for you & Captain Woodhouse, on board the George Washington. It is amidships, where there is least motion, and is next door to ours. She is not full, and promises, I hope, to be exceedingly comfortable.
Our goods and chattels will go on board at 9 o'Clock on Monday Morning. Mrs. Dickens's maid and Mr. Putnam are down with them. They will stow your things, if you please, at the same time; and will observe any directions you may give them.
I am just starting on a short excursion up the Hudson. It is not very likely that we shall return before Monday. Will you be in the way between 11 and 1 on that morning? I have not paid for your passage, or my own: the owners begging me not to do so, until the day before sailing. We will call upon them together, and settle.
In the mean time, pray make use of our sitting room. And pray beg Captain Woodhouse, in my name, to dine with us on Monday at 6.
Always Faithfully Yours
Charles Dickens
