Carlton House. I Sixteenth February 1842
Dear Sir.
I write to you from my bed; and I am truly sorry to say that I do so for the purpose of informing you that I cannot attend the Ball tonight, owing to an inflammatory affection of the throat which confined me to the house during the whole of yesterday, and obliges me to keep my room to day.
I am sure I need not tell you how very much I regret this disappointment, or how great an effort I would make to come to the Theatre, if I could do so with any degree of prudence. But you will see by the inclosed that my doctor expressly forbids it; and if you could see me, you would be at no loss to discover the soundness of his reasons for doing so.
I am Dear Sir Faithfully Yours
