Devonshire Terrace I First January 1842
My Dear Maclise.
Your gloom throws a shade upon our journey in the very outset. I will say nothing of sympathy: for between such friends as we are, it is needless.
I cannot go away, my dear fellow, without shaking hands with you. Between 2 and 3 to day, I must come and do so.
                                                                               Always Your affectionate friend
