Item Info

Item No: mca1100001
Additional Title: Book of Hours, use of Rome
Language: Latin
Folio Number: front cover
Source: Rare Book Department
Notes: Although not original to the manuscript, this binding is a good example of medieval binding, with stamped leather over wooden boards. The decoration dates to the sixteenth century and displays St. Roch dressed as a pilgrim and accompanied by an angel and a dog. The same scene is repeated four times, twice on the front cover and twice on the back. Emblems of a dog, a wyvern, a dragon, and a deer also decorate the cover. As these are common heraldic devises, they may in some way relate to the individual for whom the book was bound.
