Notes: Devotional manuscripts, such as this psalter, often began with a calendar that listed the important feast days celebrated throughout the year. This list of saints and special feasts was not fixed and could vary from region to region, a fact that helps to determine where a book might have been used. This leaf, for example, gives the feast days for November. St. Bernward of Hildesheim is included on the 20th day. His feast is also listed in this calendar on August 16th. Another important Hildesheim saint, St. Godehard, is entered on May 5th. These entries suggest that the manuscript was used by someone living in or near this important monastic center in northern Germany. As is typical of most medieval calendars, entries written in red mark special feast days.
