Notes: The medieval Christian believed that David, the Old Testament king and ancestor of Christ, composed the Book of Psalms. He appears in this initial taking hold of the horizontal bar of the letter E and confronting the reader with his gaze. The effect adds a degree of liveliness to the otherwise two-dimensional surface of the page.
