Notes: This miniature marks the beginning of Book 37 of a fifty-book collection of Roman laws known as the Digest, the first of three parts of the Corpus iuris civilis (Corpus of Civil Law) compiled by the legal scholar Tiborian under the orders of the Byzantine Emperor Justinian (r. 527-565 A.D). Tiborian collected and organized the existing body of classical and current law into a coherent collection of legal doctrine. The Digest was divided into three parts; the Infortiatum comprises the second part. Book 37 discusses legal rights concerning inherited property.
