Notes: Geoffrey of Monmouth (ca. 1100-1155) wrote the History of the Kings of Britain in about 1135. He traced their history back to the mythical Brutus, the grandson of the Trojan Aeneas. Geoffrey's history also contains some of the earliest stories of Arthur and Merlin as well as figures from Shakespearian drama, such as Lear and Cymbeline.
