Notes: Raymond of PeƱafort (c. 1175 - 1275), a member of the Dominican Order, was an authority on the subject of canon law. His Summa de casibus poenitentia (Treatise on the Cases of Penance), a manual of canon law for confessors, was intended for use in determining the type and amount of penance a person should receive for a specific crime or sinful act. The gloss, written in the smaller script on the right, was composed by William of Rennes, a contemporary of Raymond. His gloss often accompanies the text of the Summa de casibus poenitentia. The rubric in the middle of the page marks a chapter on dealing with legal matters pertaining to sacred feasts.
