In reference to the "infernal benefit," Catherine had written to Miss Kelly on Dickens's behalf on 30 Apr, sympathizing with her being unwell and saying that Lemon would do all he could to forward her benefit. She wrote again on 6 May, asking her to "bring the play" with her on the Sunday (MS Dickens House).
