My Dear Lady Gordon.
I do not care to have mere translations for Household Words. They are in many respects objectionable for such a publication. But, a good account of a curious book, introducing translated passages from it - such a description of a book as may present it with the describer's originality and individuality, as well as its own - is a kind of article that I always like.
I should think that the book you mention, would answer the purpose extremely well. - In answer to your uncle's bailiff, your slave replies a Guinea a page.
I do remember that I once (in a former state of existence, it appears to me) solaced myself with the hope of coming to pass a day with you. But behold, I am on the margin of the deep - working at a new book - going up steep hills all the rest of the day - plunging into salt water at early hours of the morning - and generally living the life of an amiable fighting-man in training for his next match.
Ever Faithfully Yours nevertheless
