My Dear Paxton.
I have just come back (2 P.M.) from reading at Rochester, and I wish you had been there. It was a tremendous success, and quite a wonderful demonstration.
With me at this door, by the best of coincidences, arrives your Hamper. A thousand thanks for it – not less for the Seasonable spirit of hearty friendship in which I know you send it to me, than for its own jolly sake.
I am quite affected by the generosity of my friends at Coventry. But they shall not spoil me, if I can help it; and I will try to “go” as truly and staunchly as the Repeater itself.
All here unite with me in all good wishes, seasonable and unseasonable, to you and all your house. And I am always, with great regard,
My Dear Paxton
Faithfully Yours
Charles Dickens
Sir Joseph Paxton.
P.S. You say “4 Hares and 4 Pheasants”. But there are 8 of each, in the miraculous hamper!
