Tavistock House

Tavistock Square, London, W.C.

Monday Twenty Eighth November, 1859

Dear Murray.

I daresay you remember Mr. Marcus Stone's picture in the Exhibition last year, and the sensation it made as the work of a young man of remarkable (power) and promise. It is (to) the same Mr. Marcus Stone that I give this letter, and he is the son of my dear old friend Frank Stone of the Academy who died, next door here, but ten days ago.

He wishes to make an additional way for himself in life, by the illustration of books. He draws (beautifully), is a faithful student, has a quick and shrewd observation added to a ready and skilled hand and graceful eye, and is as modest and reliable as it is possible for artist to be. I have known him and his progress from his childhood, and his character and capacity are matters of absolute and intimate certainty with me.

It is very likely that you might have the opportunity of trying such a hand. That you will do so, if you can, is all I ask; I know very well that he will work out all the rest for himself.

Faithfully Yours always

Charles Dickens
