Friday Morning

My Dear Sir.

I had feared that you were not going to introduce me to the victim at all--so long have I expected him without avail.

I think the best plan will be to have him set up at the end of the Month, and a proof sent to you which you will be able to keep a week or two, and correct at your leisure. Do you think so, too?

It is really very unfair of you to charge any mistakes in your last paper upon me. --I exerted myself about it at the very last moment when there was not time to take it away from the printer's at your own special request. I can have no object but to please the contributors to the best of my power--more especially yourself--and this is very discouraging indeed.

I have not yet had time to read your friend's paper, but I will do so and return you an answer before the close of the Month. I have another paper about Ceylon you sent me, which I will return.

I want to see you about the Wictim, and also to ask you a question having reference to the "Hanniwersary". Shall you be passing near here any morning, or shall I call upon you?

Faithfully Yours

Charles Dickens

W. Jerdan Esqre.

"Hanniwersary": Pilgrim (vol 1, p. 250n) mentions the 48th anniversary dinner of the LIterary Fund (of which Jerdan was Treasurer), held at the Freemasons' Tavern, 3 May 37, with the Duke of Somerset in the chair. Among those present were Ainsworth, Macrone and Bentley. CD acted as steward and replied to the toast of "the health of Mr Dickens and the rising Authors of the Age": probably his first public speech (see Speeches, ed. K. J. Fielding, p. I).
