Office of All the Year Round
Thursday Eighteenth September 1862.
My Dear Trollope.
The Dutchess Veronica is most admirable--a masterly picture, painted with knowledge, and Art, and Everything to make it glowing and striking.
I have begged Wills to send you the proofs, in order that I may have your approval (or disapproval) of some excisions I have made on the New Year's Morning. It struck me strongly that some of La Maladetta Veronica's solioquy on that horrible day, anticipated and weakened the catastrophe. Hence my endeavour to preserve for the catastrophe its full power and force.
Ever Believe me
(Very hastily at this present)
Faithfully Yours
Charles Dickens
T.A. Trollope Esquire

Notes:
Dutchess Veronica: five installments, AYR, 4 Oct--1 Nov 62, VIII, 88-192.
The final installment was "New Year's Day at Villa Salviati" and "The Majesty of the Law."
As they stand, the Duchess's two soliloquies (p. 190) only hint at the horrible revenge carried out of her unfaithful husband: her placing of the head of his mistress in the silver linen-basin she has delivered to him (p. 191).
