16 HYDE PARK GATE SOUTH,
 KENSINGTON GORE. W.
Sunday Ninth March 1862

My Dear Chorley
I can honestly tell you that the improvement in your delivery yesterday, was something amazing. It left nothing to be desired. Everybody could hear; everybody had leisure to dwell upon the meaning; and your own distinctness and emphasis found an echo in the quality of the general perception. You can hardly know how much was gained by that determined manner of holding the sentences, or what additional vigour the matter (admirable throughout) derived from it in the ears of the audience.
I shall not commit you to that handsome Chatham proposal, without first satisfying myself that the people deserve it. They do not support the Institution - which would infallibly perish but for my bringing them in £70 a year by a gratuitous reading - they don't attend the lectures at all well, except on that annual occasion; and they are, as a local town-functionary informed me, "a tepid lot". So I shall cross-examine the real active men in the management pretty closely, before I hint at the pearl I could get for them.
Are you coming to me on Thursday. It is Copperfield on that day week also, and on that day week also. I mention this, in case you should have other fish to fry on Thursday first.
  Ever affecy.
  CD.
