Notes: This initial begins the first response of the first nocturn of Matins for the feast of St. Francis (Oct. 4), "Franciscus ut in publicum cessat negotiari ..." (Francis, leaving behind the affairs of the world). The church visible behind St. Francis may be the little chapel known as the "Portiuncula," where it is believed he founded the Franciscan Order in 1209.
