Gad's Hill Place
Higham by Rochester, Kent
Tuesday Thirty First October 1865
My Dear Mr. Hills,
I trouble you with this note because I want some --Poison!
We have a sudden invasion of rats in the gardens and outhouses. My gardener, a very careful man, is confident of exterminating them with Arsenic. Will you kindly give directions for a packet to be sent to him here? His name is John Russell. By being consigned straight to him, the delay that might otherwise be consequent on its being addressed to me, will be avoided. I may be back in London on my Xmas No. business for a week or more. He expects the packet, and is methodically prepared to place it in immediate safety.
Faithfully Yours always
