Dear Madam
I of course receive your interesting letter in confidence.
My condemnation cannot in strict reason, I think, be considered so indiscriminate as you would make it, for I purposely used the word “many”, in referring to bad sick wards in work houses, so that there should remain an outer margin for the good. The Vestry of the Parish of Saint Swiffins describe themselves through their own words and acts, and the responsibility of that description is their own.
For some months to come, I shall have so many engagements out of London, that I cannot at present contemplate a visit to your charge. But I am very glad to have the assurance I derive from your communication, that you administer it in the best spirit.
Faithfully Yours
Charles Dickens
