OFFICE OF ALL THE YEAR ROUND
Monday Sixth May 1867
My Dear Bertha
I am happy that I can honestly tell you I think there is a good deal of merit in it. But I am afraid it will not do as it stands. The idea you have, is (as it were) rather thrown away, and you certainly do not make enough of the closing Scene. The people too are very slightly indicated, and don't resolve themselves into individuals sufficiently distinct. Condensation in the first two thirds of the story is greatly needed, while on the other hand you could make more of the last Third.
I should like to think it over quietly, after I have finished my Readings. We will make it answer the purpose of All The Year Round, somehow, and I should like to put you in the way of doing it, mainly, for yourself. We must have a talk about it. I could indicate in a work or two, what I couldn't detail in a treatise. If you will pick up my meaning, I am much mistaken if you don't find your story pick itself up surprisingly.
With love to all
Ever affectionately Yours
Charles Dickens
