Friday Twenty Third October 1868
My Dear Kent
The sudden doubt does appear in my eyes the wildest hallucination! I am perfectly certain that your impulse was thoroughly manly and noble, and to be acted upon with thorough confidence. I read the article with unqualified pleasure, sympathy, and respect. It could not have been better.
I take blame to myself now, for not having at once written and told you so. But I came to town (how could you know that, by the bye!) and hoped to see you.
Ever affectionately
