GAD'S HILL PLACE,
HIGHAM BY ROCHESTER, KENT
Wednesday Twenty First July, 1869
My Dear Trollope.
The American publishers seem of a sudden to have become rather shy of investing in early proofs. No advance have been made to me in respect of Veronica, as yet. Possibly they wait to make her acquaintance before "proposing". I am on the watch, and have cautioned my son Charley-who has succeeded Wills, retired-to lure on any reasonable offerer. In all previous cases, the offer has originated on the American side.
After a very cold beginning of summer, we have had a few very hot days here. We tremendously large farmers want some rain-and apparently are not going to have it, for the skies look dry. That other matters are in a rather alarming state in these parts, I am sorry to let you know on the authority of the local curate. He has received a celestrial Commission to announce (in a sermon) that the "spoliation" of the Irish Church is the result of one of the Ministers having popish family connexions, and that if that "act of apostacy and blasphemy" be completed, Our Saviour will presently come on earth 'to assert and avenge himself". This is the latest news of the latter half of the nineteenth century as it unfolds its wisdon within 30 miles of London!
A thousand thanks for the charming Italian Vista you open between October and November, but there is no chance of my being able to quit England this year.
Ever your affectionate
Charles Dickens
