Stephen Langton (d. 1228) was the Archbishop of Canterbury during the reign of King John. He supported the barons who opposed the King and was instrumental in negotiating the King's signing of the Magna Carta. Langton was also a prolific theologian, writing many commentaries on books of the Bible. The manuscript shown here, which contains his commentary on the Pentateuch (the first five books of the Old Testament), may have been produced during his lifetime.
