Notes: This miniature begins the Hours of the Cross. Of note in this miniature are the bodies of the two thieves crucified with Christ. The thief to Christ's right is the good thief Dismas, who redeems himself by asking Christ to remember him in heaven. His body is straight and his head is up. In contrast, to Christ's left is the bad thief Gestas who fails to recognize Christ. Gesta's broken - and unredeemed - body twists upon the cross, and his head hangs down. These portrayals helped the medieval viewer to interpret the nature of sin and redemption in physical terms.
