Friday Night September Fourth
1846.
My Dear Mr. Watson
In the intervals of my tears, I write this, to send you in the morning with Byron. — I have put a little piece of paper into the whereabout of the Prisoner of Chillon.
Grief and jolting deprive me of the power of offering any remark, oral or written, on any subject whatever. I have merely strength of mind – and barely strength of fingers – to offer my dismal regards to Mrs. Watson. Having done which, I return to the gorgeous red sofa, where I have been endeavoring, with my head very low, and my heels very high, to find some temporary consolation in the bosom of the newspapers.
Always believe me
Very faithfully yours
Charles Dickens
The Hon.
Richard Watson
