Yudhishthira and Draupadi Give Away Their Possessions to Brahmans

Source: Rare Book Department
Notes:
The subject of this painting is the Pandava leader Yudhishthira and his wife Draupadi’s dispersal of their possessions to the Brahmans prior to their twelve-year exile. However, the artist’s primary focus is clearly the observation of daily life. Cattle are herded through a crowd teeming with activity. Figures gesture expressively and offer each other meaningful glances. Shravan, the artist to whom this painting is ascribed, was one of the dozen or so artists who worked on both this 1598–99 Razmnama and an earlier, more luxurious version made for the Mughal Emperor Akbar during the 1580s.
