Notes:

In this last painting from the Free Library’s holdings, Bhishma explains the tenets of the Sankhya branch of philosophy, a dualistic system of beliefs that posits a distinction between the conscious mind and the unconscious, physical body. While the composition follows a standard type of court scene commonly seen in Mughal paintings, some degree of artistic experimentation is evident. The voluminous curtains in red and green, for example, appear to have been borrowed from an unknown European source. The specifics of the furnishings have not quite translated, however. Clearly the drapes are meant to be secured in some way, perhaps tied to a post, but the Mughal artist left them hanging in mid-air.
