When Duryodhana, the chief son of the Kaurava clan, challenges the Pandavas to a game of dice, Yudhishthira, the eldest Pandava brother, finds it difficult to refuse. The outcome leaves the Pandavas without possessions, a kingdom, or even their own freedom. Adding insult to injury, one of the Kauravas attempts to disrobe Draupadi, the wife of all five of the Pandava brothers. Due to the intercession of Krishna, however, Draupadi’s honor remains intact. As each layer of clothing is removed, another miraculously appears to replace it. Yudhishthira agrees to one last throw of the dice but loses this one as well, and so the Pandavas must exile themselves from their kingdom for twelve years.
