This item appeared in the exhibition "Sacred Stories: The World's Religious Traditions" in the Rare Book Department, August 2015-January 2016.
This is the label from that exhibition:
This manuscript is the Gospel of Mark, one of the books of the Christian New Testament, accompanied by scriptural commentary. The size and placement of the writing distinguishes Scripture from gloss.
Notes: At the end of the eleventh century, theologians began the process of collecting centuries of Biblical exegesis since patristic times into a single commentary on each book of the Bible. This process resulted in the "Glossa ordinaria," the Latin name for the ordinary or standard gloss of the Bible used by scholastic theologians to teach and explain the meaning of Scripture. This glossed manuscript contains only the Gospel of Mark and its prologue, shown here. The two strikingly different scripts are used to distinguish Scripture (the large script) from the gloss (the smaller script). A large, decorated initial M to begin the word "Marcus" was intended to fill the empty space in the center column, but the decoration of the manuscript was never completed.
Notes: Opening page, beginning the Prologue to the Gospel of Mark
Notes: This manuscript has been dated to ca. 1150.
