St. John on Patmos
This manuscript has been dated to ca. 1460.
This miniature begins the Gospel Lesson of John. To the left of St. John, a little devil attempts to steal his inkwell. This iconography comes from a medieval legend in which the devil attempted to thwart St. John from writing his Gospel. The manuscript was illuminated by an anonymous artist working in Troyes in the 1460s and 1470s known as the Master of the Troyes Missal and artists in his workshop.
