With this cartoon the artist illustrates the wishful dreams of the Democratic party, shown here in its usual depiction as a donkey. The Democratic party dreams that the pre-election claim made by the Republicans to gain control of both the Senate and the House will prove false. The Republican elephant's head is shown mounted in defeat. The cartoonist questions the liklihood of these Democratic hopes by titling the piece: "but he'll wake up."
