Notes: This manuscript contains a collection of English statutes dating from 1235-1299 and the Magna Carta, a document first issued in 1215 by King John (ruled 1199-1216). John had been forced to put his seal on the document, which limited the power of the king, by rebellious barons. He sought to repudiate it almost immediately after it was issued, appealing to the Pope. The charter was reissued in 1225 by Henry III. The page shown here begins the manuscript's copy of the Magna Carta. The king who sits in the initial E represents Edward I (ruled 1272-1307), who reconfirmed the document in 1297.
