Notes: Opening with the beginning of the Hours of the Virgin
Notes: The recto of this opening begins Matins of the Hours of the Virgin for the use of Bourges, as the rubric on the verso states. The manuscript was made for Jean Lallemant the Younger (d. 1548), a member of the prominent Lallemant family of Bourges and a recognized bibliophile. An inscription in Lallemant's hand records that the manuscript was made for him on July 12, 1544, presumably the date when he actually received it. Lallemant also favored the six-winged seraph motif seen in the borders of this opening; it appears in the decoration of other manuscripts he commissioned as well as in the decoration of the architecture built under his patronage.
