Item Info

Additional Title: Missal, Dominican use
Script: Gothic bookhand
Language: Latin
Folio Number: f. 183r

Notes: This initial begins the Canon of the Mass, "Te igitur clementissime Pater..." (And so, most merciful Father). The liturgy of this missal follows the Dominican liturgy established by Humbert of Romans, Master General of the Dominican Order (1254-1263). In the lower margin, an Italian scribe has written a prayer, now partially erased, for Charles I, King of Sicily, his wife and family, and deceased friends, "Ora pro domino Karolo primo rege sicilie et domina beatrice uxore eorumque liberis parentibus et amicis defunctis" (Pray for Lord Charles, first king of Sicily, and Lady Beatrice, his wife, and for their children, parents, and departed friends). All of Charles' children had died by 1309, indicating that this prayer was written after that date.
