Missal, Dominican use

Item Info

Item No: mca1581861
Additional Title: Missal, Dominican use
Script: Gothic bookhand
Language: Latin
Folio Number: f. 186r
Source: Rare Book Department
Notes: Initial R with the Resurrection
Notes: The manuscript can be dated to before 1285.
Notes: This initial begins the Introit for Easter Sunday, "Resurrexi, et adhuc tecum sum ..." (I have risen and am still with thee). The liturgy of this missal follows the Dominican liturgy established by Humbert of Romans, Master General of the Dominican Order (1254-1263). This manuscript is unusual because it contains both the sung and spoken parts of the mass. More often, the sung parts of the Mass were found in separate books called graduals. This feature and the small size of the manuscript suggest that it was for the personal use of a Dominican friar.
