Notes: This image of Christ as the Salvator Mundi (the Redeemer of the world), accompanies a prayer to St. Veronica, which venerates the Holy Face of Christ. This image was popular in Flanders in the 15th and 16th centuries, and depicted by fifteenth-century artists, such as Jan van Eyck and Hans Memling. The border decoration, with illusionistic flowers, insects, and small animals on a gold ground, is typical of Flemish illumination at this time.
